This two-day rowing event has reached new highs - 1,451 entries, 167 participating rowing clubs for the 125 events with more than 6,000 athletes set to race on the two-mile Fish Creek Course. The regatta claims to be the third largest rowing event in the Western Hemisphere. For the Bay View Crew it was the final race for the season. The short story is that the Freshman Eight took a third place medal, finishing 3rd of 9 boats. The First Varsity rowed a torrid pace to finish 10th out of 36 crews. The Junior Varsity finished 17th of 22 boats and the Varsity Four did a spectacular job by finishing a very close 9th out of 49 crews, only 14 seconds behind the winners. Now it is on to the details. Among these rowers and coxswains was the entire team from St. Mary Academy – Bay View. Leading the way was the Freshman Eight, who are mostly beginners. They did an outstanding job winning a bronze medal with a strong third place finish in 13:06.01 over nine other crews from upper New York, Connecticut, New Hampshire, and Massachusetts. The winning crew was Shenendowha High School (NY) with a time of 12:49.97. Bay View Lineup: C-Morgan Morris; S-Maura Flanagan; 7-Haley Pare; 6-Hannah Fitzpatrick; 5-Tess van Schepen; 4-Danielle Riggin; 3-Miranda Tresca; 2-Megan Martin; B-Christina Healy. Van Schepen, a Lincoln School freshman, helped round out the Bay View boat, which is permissible under the regatta rules. This was freshman coxswain Morgan Morris’ first race. The race also provided an excellent conclusion to the novice crew’s season and their coaches, Ynke de Koe and Samantha Bray. Later in the day the Bay View Varsity placed 10th out of 36 crews from the Northeast and Canada. Like all head races, the crews were sent off at 10 second intervals. Winsor School started behind Bay View and gradually began to close the gap. Winsor’s advances turned the event into a long sprint for the Bengal Crew as they their pace to 36-37 strokes per minute to prevent the pass by Winsor. As the crews approached the bridge at the finish line, Winsor pushed its bow ahead of the Bengal Crew. Bay View’s time was 11:50.35 to Winsor’s 2nd place of 11:28.94 and the first place crew from the Saratoga Rowing Association, 11:11.93. This is the fastest two-mile time for a Bay View eight at this regatta. Bay View Varsity Lineup: C-Bethany Biszko; S-Maeve Garlick; 7-Lauren Laboissonniere; 6-Chelsea Robin; 5-Alice Murray; 4-Helen Manzella; 3-Harlee Nordstrom; 2- Michelle Mackie; B-Celine Gill. For the Bay View Junior Varsity, it was iron rower time for Danielle Riggin and Maura Flanagan. Both had already raced in the morning Freshman Event, but now they returned to help power the Second Varsity to a 17th place finish out of twenty-two boats in a time of 13:30.81. The winner was a strong crew from the Saratoga Rowing Association in 11:53.49. C-Nicole Karwashan; S-Christine Abram; 7-Danielle Riggin; 6-Lindsey Sanford; 5-Maura Flanagan; 4-Marissa Marcos; 3-Stephany Lopes; 2-Ashley DiSegna; B-Vanessa Ghazarian. This was freshman coxswain Nicole Karwashan’s first race. The final event for the team from Riverside was the Junior Women’s Fours with Coxswain. This was a reprise for the strongest four the school has ever had: Maeve Garlick at stroke; Alice Murray, 3; Chelsea Robin, 2; and Harlee Nordstrom at bow. Each had already rowed a gutsy two-mile race in the eight at 1:25 PM and returned at 3:30 PM to the fours to face 49 other crews. The result was a smoothly rowed race during which they passed four other boats produce a 9th place finish 14:17.69, very close to the winners, Ottawa Rowing Club, 14:03.70. This concludes the fall season for Bay View, who will now have a break from racing. They will return to the water again in the spring to race the shorter 1500 meters races and take on the top crews in New England. Last year the Varsity placed 8th of the 18 top crews at the New England Interscholastic Championships. This year’s crew aims to improve that record. | | | October 23, 2008 Bay View Varsity Soccer vs. Ponaganset High School W 3-0 Scoring the goals were Madeline Laliberte with an assist from Caitlin Jackson; Bryar Botelho with an assist from Madeline Laliberte and a goal by Nichole Vargas. Bay View Places 25th of 68 Crews at Head of the Charles Regatta
Cambridge: On October 19, 2008 the Bay View Varsity completed the serpentine three mile Head of the Charles course in a time 18:43.5. With Maeve Garlick setting the pace at stroke, the Bengal Crew charged up the wind-blown waters rowing a steady 32 strokes per minute. By the time they reached the Riverside Boat Club, only four minutes into the race, they passed the Walt Whitman Crew (Washington, D.C.). It was then on to the quick turn at the Weeks Footbridge, after which they quickly rowed by the girls of the Bromfield School (Fitchburg, MA). At that point, Bay View had upped the rating to 33-34 strokes per minute with open water ahead of them so that Coxswain Emi Marchetti could easily make the turns through the Anderson and Elliot Bridges. This was a great debut for the Bengal program, which started rowing only nine years ago. Even though the crew finished well back behind the winners, Community Rowing/17:23.1, Bay View was still faster than 42 other crews. This places them in the top 50% of the finishing crews and guarantees Bay View's return for 2009. The Head of the Charles Lineup: Coxswain-Emilie Marchetti, '09; Stroke-Maeve Garlick, '09; 7-Lauren Laboissonniere, '09; 6-Chelsea Robin, '11; 5-Alice Murray, '09; 4-Michelle Mackie, '09; 3-Harlee Nordstrom, '09; 2-Jenny Holtz, '09; Bow-Celine Gill, '10 | | | October 16, 2008 Bay View Varsity Soccer vs. Lincoln High School W 1-0 Scoring the goal was Stacey Peloquin with an assist from Caitlin Jackson. This time facing competition from western Connecticut, New York and New Jersey, the Bay View Varsity took to the water with 38 other high school crews. Rowing a solid and smooth 32-33 strokes per minute, they passed three boats and were easily closing in on a third at the end of their race to finish in 5th place with a time of 16:06 over the 3-mile Housatonic River Course. This week and this race were punctuated with the return of Maeve Garlick at stroke and Chelsea Robin, who were flu-struck last week. The Jayvee, again rowing with five novice rowers behind our experienced stern three of Christine Abram, Danielle Riggin, and Lindsay Sanford, rowed a steady, firm pace of 30 strokes per minute to finish in 17:36.5. The winners of the race, Maritime Rowing Club from Norwalk, CT covered the same distance in 15:08.9. And finally, our Novice Crew, most of them rowing in their first race ever, did an excellent job finishing the course in 18:15.37 to finish 9th out of 20 other crews. Anyone wishing more complete information on the results may do so by Googling: Head of the Housatonic Results. The complete lineups for the Housatonic were: Varsity: C-Emi Marchetti; Stroke-Maeve Garlick; 7-Lauren Laboissonniere; 6-Chelsea Robin; 5-Alice Murray; 4-Michelle Mackie; 3-Harlee Nordstrom; 2-Jenny Holtz; Bow-Celine Gill. Rowing on the Merrimack River Course, the Bay View Varsity Eight covered the 2.5 mile distance in 21:57.8 minutes. This is the best finish ever for Bay View at the this regatta, which is another Head of the River Race where the crews go through a starting gate at 10 second intervals, so passing another boat can be a major event. During the course of this race, Bay View's Varsity passed three boats and was closing in on a fourth as they crossed the finish line. This was an outstanding effort and result, especially since two of the top Varsity rowers, the regular stroke, Maeve Garlick, and Six Seat Chelsea Robin were not in the boat because they were sick with the flu. The Varsity Lineup was: C-Emi Marchetti, S-Jenny Holtz, 7-Lauren Laboissonniere, 6-Helen Manzella, 5-Alice Murray, 4-Michelle Mackie, 3-Harlee Nordstrom, 2-Christine Abram, B-Celine Gill. This year's crew decreased markedly the distance between themselves and the winner, Boston's Community Rowing, who finished the same course in 20:58.5. Bay View's Junior Varsity finished in 24:53.3 in the same event, which put them 27th out of 35 eights. This was a good finish, since this was the first race ever for four of the JV rowers. The Junior Varsity Lineup was: C-Bethany Biszko, S-Lindsay Sanford, 7-Danielle Riggin, 6-Ashley DiSegna, 5-Maura Flanagan, 4-Miranda Tresca, 3-Megan Martin, 2-Stephany Lopes, B-Vanessa Ghazarian. Both the Varsity and Junior Varsity rowed their race at 33-34 strokes per minute.
