Angell Writing Center Opens at Bay View

Colleen Gribbin welcomes guests, including (l to r) Claire Angell Miller,’49, Sr. Elizabeth McAuliffe and Bishop Kenneth Angell, to the dedication of the David and Lynn Angell Writing Center on September 19, 2008. The Center was funded through a grant from the Angell Foundation.

Although David and Lynn "have left the building", we hope that everyone here at Bay View will come to "know their names." So, "Cheers"! Here's to David and Lynn, the Foundation, and everyone who has made our Angell wing a possibility. – Sister Carol Jussaume

David Angell was a producer and writer for television sitcoms, Archie Bunker’s Place, Cheers, Wings and Frazier, a Providence native and a graduate of Providence College. His wife, Lynn, was a librarian and worked with numerous charitable institutions in Los Angeles. The couple was aboard American Airlines Flight 11 when it hit the north tower of the World Trade Cente on 9/11/2001. A foundation was established to continue the charitable work that David and Lynn cared so much about.

The David and Lynn Angell Writing Center was constructed from the former Guidance Center in Mercy Hall. The Center consists of five rooms – two rooms with soft furniture and casual writing space, one room with six tables and chairs for group instruction, one small room with a table for one-on-one tutoring and a faculty conference/workroom.

Nine laptop computers are available for student use. Remedial and evaluative writing programs will be installed on the computers along with software that assists with the creative writing process. A mobile Smartboard will also be ordered for use in the Center and English classrooms. Books, magazines and other materials relating to the writing process are also on hand for student use. A member of the English Department is assigned to the Writing Center each period of the school day and the Center is also open before school.
