On October 14th, St. Mary Academy Bay View students asked questions and spoke to junior Molly Alves as she braved the cold weather of Churchill, Manitoba, Canada. Molly was in Canada as a volunteer representative of Roger Williams Park Zoo. The Zoo, in cooperation with Polar Bears International, sponsored an interactive videocast from the Marcy Hall Auditorium. Molly explained that the students were being instructed by six facilitators who were zoo keepers, environmental biologists, and World Wildlife Fund representatives. Over the course of one week, students and instructors tracked and observed polar bears and studied the effects of global warming on the environment. text by Lee Haines, Department of History and Social Sciences |
